About ISHA

ISHA – The Hip Preservation Society was originally founded in Paris on 18 May 2008 by 12 hip arthroscopists from Australia, Europe, and North and South America. Over time, ISHA has gone from strength to strength, and now counts among its members practitioners engaged in all areas of hip preservation, including open surgery, sports medicine, and rehabilitation. ISHA’s vision is to be the premier international society for education and research in hip preservation, and we are always seeking like-minded individuals to join us.

Application for Membership

Application for membership should be made to the Membership Secretary on the standard application form, which is accessed via the button below.

You are asked to make the applicable subscription fee payment at the time of application. Applications will be inspected by the Membership Committee monthly, and membership notified thereafter. Membership will be formally ratified annually by the Ordinary Members at an Annual General Meeting (AGM) or an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM).

Should your application be unsuccessful, we will refund the fee paid less GBP £60 administration fee.

Membership is renewed annually on 1 June but membership applications can be made at any time during the year.

Membership Rates

ISHA membership is offered on an annual basis running from 1 June to 31 May the following year. Members joining part way through a membership year will be charged a pro-rated fee for the 1st year of membership.

Fees, payable in British Pounds (GBP) from 1 June 2022, to include the benefits above, are:

  • Ordinary Membership – GBP £270
  • Associate Membership – GBP £160
  • Physiotherapist Membership – GBP £100
  • Affiliate Membership – GBP £100
  • Emeritus Membership – GBP £80
  • Trainee Membership – Free of Charge*

Payment can be made at the time of application by credit card on the application form, or bank transfer and standing order options are available.

*Eligibility criteria to be met

Membership Categories

Ordinary Membership

Is open to either surgeons or physicians who have a special interest in hip arthroscopic surgery and/or hip preservation who have been in clinical practice for a minimum of two years following accreditation (or equivalent) in their field. The Membership Committee encourages applicants who have demonstrated efforts in research, publications, or clinical leadership in the field, or by the presentation of a paper to the Society. Exceptions may be made following consideration by the Executive Committee.

Associate Membership

Is open to surgeons and physicians who have completed formal training, but who have been practicing less than 2 years. This status will be confirmed by the Executive Committee and presented to the Ordinary Membership at an AGM or EGM for their approval. Associate Members are not eligible to vote on matters concerning the Society.

Physiotherapist Membership

Is open to those who are physiotherapist or rehabilitation specialists. Physiotherapist Members are not eligible to vote on matters concerning the Society.

Affiliate Membership

Is open to those who are not surgeons or physicians and/or who do not possess a medical qualification. Affiliate Members are not eligible to vote on matters concerning the Society.

Trainee Membership

As part of ISHA’s commitment to education, training and raising the awareness of the importance of hip preservation as a sub specialty of Orthopaedic Surgery, ISHA are pleased to have launched in September 2024, a new Trainee Membership category.

This offers residents or fellows in training free membership of ISHA and access to membership resources and benefits whilst in training up to the age of 35*.

Emeritus Membership

Is open to Ordinary Members on reaching the age of 65 years and who are no longer in full clinical practice. This status will be confirmed by the Executive Committee and presented to the Ordinary Membership at an AGM or EGM for their approval. Emeritus Members are not eligible to vote on matters concerning the Society unless they form part of the Executive Committee.

Honorary Membership

May be offered to distinguished surgeons, physicians, scientists, and other practitioners who have a special interest in hip arthroscopic surgery. This status, which is by invitation from ISHA only, will be confirmed by the Executive Committee and presented to the Ordinary Membership at an AGM or EGM for their approval. Honorary Members are not eligible to vote on matters concerning the Society.

Conditions of Membership

Ordinary Membership Maintenance Criteria

  • Attendance at one ISHA Annual Scientific Meeting every 3 years
  • Compliance with the ISHA Code of Conduct

Trainee Membership Eligibility and Maintenance Criteria

Eligibility

To be eligible for Resident/Fellow membership, you must:

  • Be a medical or osteopathic doctor
  • Be currently enrolled in a certified orthopaedic residency programme or a fellowship
  • Maximum 35 years of age

Dues & Fees

  • ISHA membership is free for those who are residents and fellows, as an investment in the future of the field
  • Validation letter required at application from your Institute / Centre to confirm career status

Obligations of Membership

  • Adhere to all rules, regulations, and criteria outlined in ISHA’s Bylaws
  • Actively participate and take full advantage of this remarkable opportunity
  • Convert to Associate Membership upon completion of your training
  • Requirement to provide revalidation of status on an annual basis to maintain trainee eligibility

Cessation of Membership will occur:

  • Upon receipt of a member’s written resignation
  • After 2 years of non-payment of membership dues
  • After failing to attend a minimum of one Society Annual Scientific Meeting every 3 years (Ordinary Members only)
  • As a result of a decision by the CIO Trustees that cessation is in the best interests of the Society; examples might include, but shall not be limited to, loss of licence to practice, criminal behaviour, or unethical practice of any kind

Accessing Your Member Account

  • You can visit the “My ISHA” page at any time to gain access to your personal account, wherein you can update your personal details and pay any outstanding member dues. This facility is open to all users, including pending members.
  • To access the Member Area of the website, your membership must have been confirmed and your member dues must be fully up to date. This is because only approved members in “good standing” are entitled to make use of member-only resources.

NEW: Friend of ISHA

ISHA is delighted to announce the launch of its “Friend of ISHA” initiative. Friendship of ISHA costs just USD $75 per year and, although not a full membership of the Society, brings many educational benefits designed to enhance individuals’ hip preservation knowledge and professional networks (see list of included and excluded benefits below).

The Friend of ISHA category is open exclusively to individuals resident in countries classified as low or lower middle income according to the latest World Bank data available here. Kindly note that ISHA reserves the right to verify applicants’ eligibility.
